On March 7, 2026, interns from the College of Accounting Education (CAE) Internship Program participated in a Community Extension tree-weeding activity held at Loleng’s Mountain Resort in Toril, Davao City. The initiative focused on clearing weeds and unwanted growth around young trees to support their healthy development and promote environmental care. The activity also provided interns with the opportunity to engage directly with members of the local community. For Zaira Mel Enriquez, one of the interns, this interaction became one of the most memorable parts of the experience. “It was when we had to split up and work with the community. At first, it felt uncomfortable because we didn’t know anyone, and we were too shy to even start a conversation,” she shared. As the activity progressed, the atmosphere became more relaxed and collaborative. “The people there turned out to be very friendly… before we knew it, we were laughing together while cleaning the area,” Zaira added. This experience highlighted how simple interactions can build connections, even in unfamiliar environments. Beyond teamwork, the activity also shaped the interns’ perspectives on environmental responsibility. According to Zaira, “Caring for the environment becomes more enjoyable when you do it with others.” She noted that working alongside people with the same mindset made the task feel more meaningful. “When you’re surrounded by individuals who share the same mindset, the work doesn’t feel like a task anymore… instead, it becomes something fulfilling.” The success of the activity was made possible through the guidance and support of the program coordinators, faculty members, and the University of Mindanao Community Extension Center, along with the cooperation of the staff of Loleng’s Mountain Resort. Their collective efforts ensured the smooth implementation of the initiative. More than just an environmental effort, the tree-weeding activity served as a platform for learning, collaboration, and community engagement. It reflects CAE’s continued commitment to promoting environmental stewardship and active participation among students. In line with global efforts, the initiative also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Climate Action (SDG 13) and Life on Land (SDG 15), encouraging students to take part in sustainable practices through simple yet meaningful actions.
