LEAD 4.0 Phase 2 Strengthens Research Excellence: UM Researchers Sharpen Proposal Development and Budget Planning for 2026 DOST Grants
The University of Mindanao Research and Innovation Center (UMxRIC) successfully concluded the two-day Leveraging Expertise to Advance and Develop (LEAD) 4.0 Research Grant Proposals for the 2026 DOST Call – Phase 2, equipping project leaders and research teams with critical competencies needed to develop competitive and fundable research proposals for the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Held at the Cagliari Hall on May 14–15, 2026, the capacity-building initiative brought together researchers from various disciplines to strengthen both the technical and financial aspects of proposal development, ensuring alignment with national research priorities and funding requirements.
Day 1 - Enhancing Methodological Rigor and Project Planning. The first day of the training focused on strengthening participants' capabilities in methodology development and project planning. Researchers were guided through practical strategies for refining research designs, aligning project objectives with the overall scope of their studies, and developing comprehensive implementation frameworks.
Participants also received hands-on mentoring in preparing work plans, Gantt charts, performance indicators, and target deliverables. Through collaborative discussions and expert consultations, project teams enhanced the clarity, feasibility, and potential impact of their proposed research initiatives.
The sessions emphasized the importance of well-structured methodologies in demonstrating scientific rigor and ensuring successful project implementation, key considerations in securing research funding support.
Day 2 - Building Competence in Strategic Budget Preparation. On the second day, the focus shifted to the preparation of strategic and responsive Line-Item Budgets (LIB), a critical component of any research grant proposal. The session was facilitated by Engr. Roumel S. Alvarez of the Center of Green Nanotechnology Innovations for Environmental Solutions, who shared valuable insights on research budget planning and resource allocation.
Participants were trained on developing realistic financial plans, preparing cost justifications, and ensuring that proposed expenditures are aligned with project objectives, activities, and expected outputs in accordance with DOST funding guidelines.
Through interactive workshops and mentoring activities, researchers gained a deeper understanding of transparency, efficiency, and accountability in managing research resources. The training also highlighted the importance of creating feasible budgets that maximize research impact while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
The successful completion of LEAD 4.0 Phase 2 reflects the University of Mindanao's continuing commitment to strengthening its research ecosystem by empowering faculty researchers and project leaders with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to compete for national research grants.
By enhancing competencies in both proposal development and financial planning, the program supports the university's goal of producing high-quality, impactful, and implementation-ready research projects that contribute to scientific advancement and national development.
As preparations for the 2026 DOST funding call continue, participants leave the program better equipped to transform innovative ideas into well-crafted proposals capable of addressing societal challenges and generating meaningful solutions through science, technology, and innovation.
