UM CRC Hosts USEP BS Agriculture Students for Entomology Educational Tour, Introduces Basic Beetle Preparation and Preservation
The University of Mindanao Coleoptera Research Center (UM CRC) warmly welcomed Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students from the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) for an educational tour focused on Entomology learning experiences. As part of their course requirements, the visiting students participated in a hands-on session on basic beetle preparation and preservation techniques, gaining valuable insights into proper specimen handling, mounting, and identification under the guidance of UM’s research staff and laboratory technicians.
During the activity, the UM CRC team demonstrated the systematic process of beetle collection, cleaning, pinning, and labeling — essential skills in entomological studies. The students also learned about the role of insects in ecological balance, biodiversity studies, and agricultural research. The interactive session provided them with a deeper appreciation of insect taxonomy and its importance in sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.
The educational visit strengthened the collaborative ties between USEP and the University of Mindanao, highlighting the latter’s commitment to advancing science education and research-based learning. Through initiatives like this, UM CRC continues to serve as a hub for scientific engagement and knowledge sharing, supporting the goals of SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 15: Life on Land by fostering curiosity and competence among future agricultural scientists.
