UM Hosts “Fly High with Drosophila” Lecture Series with Balik Scientist Dr. Terence Al Abaquita

The University of Mindanao, through its Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory, proudly hosted the inaugural session of the Fly High with Drosophila Lecture Series on November 13, 2025, at AVR 2, GET Building, UM Matina Campus. The event was led by Dr. Terence Al Abaquita, a UM-hosted PCAARRD Medium-Term Balik Scientist, who shared his expertise on the use of Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) as a powerful model organism for biomolecular and genetic research.

Dr. Abaquita emphasized the importance of Drosophila research in understanding human diseases, genetic functions, and molecular mechanisms, noting that such studies pave the way for advancements in biotechnology and biomedical sciences in the Philippines. The lecture gathered students, faculty, and research enthusiasts, providing them an opportunity to explore cutting-edge techniques and potential local applications of molecular biology in addressing societal challenges.

The Fly High with Drosophila Lecture Series reflects UM’s commitment to strengthening its research culture and fostering innovation aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). Through initiatives like this, UM continues to build meaningful partnerships with returning Filipino scientists and research institutions, empowering the next generation of innovators and contributing to the country’s scientific and technological growth.
