In line with the University of Mindanao College of Criminal Justice Education’s commitment to community engagement and legal empowerment, a seminar titled "Empowering Bagobo Tagabawa Tribal Community through Seminar on Firearms and Ammunition Law" was successfully conducted on January 29, 2025 in Barangay Catigan, Toril District, Davao City.

The event began promptly at 8:00 AM with an opening prayer, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Dean Carmelita B. Chavez delivered the welcoming remarks, expressing gratitude to the participants for their active involvement and emphasizing the importance of legal awareness in upholding peace and order, especially in indigenous communities.

From 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, Dr. Joner C. Villaluz, a distinguished criminologist, served as the resource speaker. His presentation focused on the fundamental provisions of the Firearms and Ammunition Law, its implications, and how it relates to the rights and responsibilities of citizens, particularly indigenous peoples. Dr. Villaluz engaged the audience with practical insights and real-world examples, making the session both informative and relatable.

The seminar continued in the afternoon with an open question-and-answer portion, allowing participants from the Bagobo Tagabawa community to raise concerns, clarify issues, and engage in meaningful dialogue regarding firearm ownership, licensing procedures, and community safety. The interactive session highlighted the participants’ eagerness to understand the law and their role in promoting lawful practices.

As a gesture of appreciation, a token and certificate of recognition were awarded to Dr. Villaluz for his valuable contribution to the community’s legal education. The event concluded with Dr. Roberto R. Magbojos delivering the closing remarks, commending the active participation of the attendees and the fruitful discussions that took place throughout the day. He encouraged continued collaboration and sharing of knowledge to empower indigenous communities with the tools necessary to uphold justice and ensure safety within their ancestral domains.
