UM-CHE Showcases Culinary Excellence at Buwan ng Kalutong Pilipino 2026

The University of Mindanao – College of Hospitality Education (UM-CHE) actively participated in the three-day tourism event organized by the Department of Tourism Region XI (DOT XI) and the City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO), titled “Buwan ng Kalutong Pilipino,” held from April 24–28, 2026 at Abreeza Mall in Davao City.

This annual celebration highlights the rich and diverse cuisines of the five provinces of the Davao Region. Representing UM-CHE, Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) students, under the supervision of Dr. Kiven G. Olivar and in collaboration with the Le Toque Beyond Perfection Culinary Club led by Ms. Collen Frace L. Elmedolan, actively engaged in key event activities. These included the “Market-to-Table Experience” at Bangkerohan Public Market and the “Market Table Cooking Experience Presentation” at Abreeza Mall Activity Center.

The students demonstrated world-class culinary skills and creativity by transforming locally sourced ingredients into flavorful, easy-to-prepare dishes. Their presentations emphasized both innovation and accessibility, culminating in a food tasting session shared with event participants.

In addition, Dr. Kymwell R. Hinlayagan, a CHE faculty, served as a panel discussant in the forum titled “Tourism Education for Culinary Promotions: Showcasing Philippine Cuisine from Local to Global Tourists.” During the session, Dr. Hinlayagan shared best practices in promoting culture and cuisine through academic initiatives, highlighting UM-CHE’s unique approach of preserving local recipes through creative documentation. A notable example is the college’s published cookbook, "Makatang Putahe", which integrates culinary arts with literary expression.

This collaboration underscores UM-CHE’s commitment to excellence in culinary education and cultural preservation. It further supports key UN SDG's, particularly in quality education, food security, responsible consumption and partnerships with the goals, while embodying the University’s core values of excellence, innovation, and leadership.
