A Masterpiece of Flavor and Folio: UM Launches 'Makatang Putahe'
The University of Mindanao innovates once again with the launch of the culinary cum poetry book 'Makatang Putahe' last Mar. 5, 2026 at the UM Mini Auditorium.
Makatang Putahe is a collection of beloved recipes from the kitchen of Dr. Dolores P. Torres, UM's second school president and the mother of the current school president and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Guillermo P. Torres Jr, as well as literary pieces from university faculty and staff inspired by well-known dishes and drinks developed by the College of Hospitality Education.
Graced by honorable guests Dr. Maria Christina Aquino, a PQA assessor and renowned recipe book author; as well as Dr. Leomar Jay Oblianda, the CHED XI Education Supervisor II for Hospitality and Tourism programs.
In his address to the attendees, Dr. Torres shared that his mother's recipes was able to put up a business in the early days of her moving to Davao from Cavite, and became so successful it was able to help UM tide over some financial problems during its infancy.
He recounted that it was to his delight and curiosity when Dr. Ronnie V. Amorado, senior vice president of the Academic Affairs, approached him to share the recipes of the late Dr. Dolores; with the intention to also combine it with literal works like poems and essays from the university's faculty and staff.
The project was brought to life through the heads and hands of Dr. Amorado, CHE Assistant Dean Dr. Maria Rina Quilestino, Dr. Kymwell Hinlayagan, and Dr. Florence Kristina Jimenez.
