UM Mechanical Engineering Empowers Biao Youth Through Fiber Glass Training



The University of Mindanao – Mechanical Engineering Program successfully conducted a community extension project in Brgy. Biao Guianga, Tugbok District, Davao City, last February 14, 21, and 28. Spearheaded by the nine (9) faculty members and sixteen (16) Mechanical Engineering students, the training brought together twenty-three (23) high school students, youth, and members of the men’s sector of the barangay who participated in the 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗙𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. The three Saturday sessions covered the fundamentals of fiberglass, proper handling, safety practices, and basic fabrication techniques.

The project addressed the participants’ need for technical skills by providing opportunities to undergo Fiber Glass Fabrication Competency and preparing them to pursue National Competency Assessment II. By equipping participants with marketable skills that can lead to income-generating activities, the project contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 on No Poverty, helping individuals improve their income and achieve financial freedom. Furthermore, the project benefited the participants not only by enhancing their personal skills development but also by providing an avenue for future employment and entrepreneurship, thereby aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth

The training culminated with a training assessment, awarding of certificates and giving of a starter kit which they can use to start their own business. The principal of Biao National High School and the Barangay Captain of Biao Guainga expressed their gratitude to the Engineering volunteers for the valuable skills that they imparted to the youth, a good start to making them productive members of the barangay.
