UM's Balik Scientist conducts Exit Report
The University of Mindanao's hosted Balik Scientist will hold his Exit Report Presentation on July 23, 2024 titled “Rewiring the Genetic Blueprint: Building a Sustainable Future for the Philippines through Metabolic Engineering and Synthetic Biology.”
Balik Scientist Dr. Angelo Bañares is a postdoctoral researcher at Micalis Institute, French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment in France, and Myongji University in South Korea. He is an expert in the field of Metabolic Engineering which is under the priority areas of DOST-PCIEERD. Dr. Bañares is a short-term balik scientist hosted by University of Mindanao and his BSP engagement includes the establishment of the University of Mindanao Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory (UMBEL), one of the first laboratories in the Philippines to conduct research on synthetic biology and metabolic engineering.
The Balik Scientist Program of the Department of Science and Technology aims to "promote information exchange and accelerate the flow of new technology into the country through strengthening the scientific and technological manpower of the academe and public and private institutions," as per the DOST website.
Additionally, it is the program’s objective to encourage Filipino scientists and technologists to return and reside in the Philippines and share their expertise for the development of the country.
