UMasenso Hub Conductes 2-day IP Workshop for New Incubatees
The UMasenso Hub successfully conducted a two-day Intellectual Property (IP) Workshop for its four incubatees—Bukas Bukid, RLG Voltworks, Sobear, and TanUM Nanotech Solutions—together with selected students from the Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs who are actively developing research-based innovations. This initiative was organized to strengthen participants’ understanding of intellectual property protection and equip them with the technical competencies needed to safeguard their inventions and research outputs. As a university-based innovation and incubation hub, UMasenso continuously supports startups and student researchers in transforming ideas into protected, commercially viable technologies that advance industry and support sustainable development.
The first day of the workshop focused on patent search strategies, where participants were trained to conduct systematic prior art searches using established patent databases. The session emphasized evaluating novelty, identifying existing technologies, analyzing patent classifications, and determining patentability to avoid infringement risks. Through guided demonstrations and practical exercises, the participants developed analytical skills necessary to assess the technological landscape surrounding their innovations. The second day focused on patent drafting fundamentals, with in-depth discussions of the structure and essential components of a patent document, including the abstract, the background of the invention, the detailed description, the drawings, and the claims. Participants engaged in drafting activities tailored to their respective projects, receiving technical guidance to ensure clarity, precision, and legal soundness in their documentation.
The workshop was facilitated by Ms. Dyle Legaspi, ITSO Manager of the University of Mindanao, who shared expert insights on intellectual property rights. Through this activity, participants gained practical skills in patentability assessment and drafting, enhanced their research articulation, and strengthened their readiness for technology transfer and startup scaling. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDGs 4, 8, and 9 as it promotes innovation-driven education, entrepreneurial growth, and strengthened research ecosystems.
The Intellectual Property Workshop reflects UMasenso Hub’s continued commitment to cultivating a culture of innovation, protecting intellectual property, and empowering researchers and startups to create sustainable, impactful solutions for society.
