UM-CRC`s Torrejos Joins Diplomatic Celebration Highlighting Philippine - Latvian Scientific Collaboration

Research excellence and international academic collaboration took center stage during the reception hosted by Philippine Ambassador to Latvia, Patrick A. Chuasoto, in celebration of the 128th Philippine Independence Anniversary and the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Latvia.

In a social media post, Dr. Arvids Barsevskis, Rector of Daugavpils University, expressed his honor in attending the event together with two Filipino biology students, including Ms. Chrestine Torrejos, Research Assistant of the Coleoptera Research Center of the University of Mindanao, who recently journeyed her doctoral studies at Daugavpils University.

The gathering underscored the growing partnership between Philippine and Latvian institutions, particularly in the field of biodiversity and beetle research, where collaborative initiatives have flourished through joint studies, publications, scientific expeditions, and academic exchanges.

A highlight of the reception was Ambassador Chuasoto’s recognition of Daugavpils University’s longstanding cooperation with Philippine scientists, citing it as a model of productive international collaboration.

According to Dr. Barševskis, the university’s contributions to advancing coleopteran research through partnerships with Filipino researchers have strengthened scientific ties between the two nations while creating opportunities for student and faculty mobility. He also conveyed his appreciation to the Filipino students who travel thousands of kilometers to pursue advanced studies in beetle science in Latvia, emphasizing that such academic journeys continue to build bridges between countries and contribute to the global advancement of biodiversity research.
