Statement on appearance of cracks on walls of the stairwell located at the Professional Schools Building in Matina campus
The University of Mindanao allays fears regarding the safety of its students and faculty after photographs showing cracks appearing on the walls of one of the stairwells of the University of Mindanao Professional Schools Building made the rounds.
These minor cracks are identified as superficial and in no way affect the structural integrity of the building which is why classes were allowed to continue. The safety of the building is certified by the university’s Chief of Construction for Physical Plant Management and General Services (PPMGS) and Professional Schools Building structural engineer, Engr. Emmanuel Gallora. Repairs are undergoing on the masonry wall from which the superficial surface crack was seen. The repair entails the chipping of the crack to penetrate the cement.
They conducted whole day inspections last Monday, Dec. 16 as per school operational procedure as well as through the immediate city-wide order of Acting Mayor Sebastian Duterte. However, to further dispel fears, supervisory bodies and disaster management offices are welcome to verify with the university’s PPMGS.
