College of Accounting Education bet is Mutya ng UM 2019
Fourteen intelligent and gorgeous ladies presented the very best of themselves at the annual Mutya ng UM, but one emerged victorious to serve as the face of the UM student body and of her advocacy: Dimple Grace Normandia from the College of Accounting Education.
The crowd cheered and the lights glimmered through the night as the contestants from the different colleges and branches each held their own in creative presentations of Filipino cultural attire, glamorous gown presentations, and the highly anticipated question and answer portion.
While all the finalists had worthwhile responses, Normandia’s answer to the question of what she thought was the biggest problem facing society today stood out in its timeliness: mental health. Citing statistical data from the Department of Health on depressive disorder rates in the country, she added it was fast becoming a societal problem as more and more people are beginning to think that suicide is “the last option in life.”
“In simple part, we can help them avoid this, through offering acts of empathy, compassion, and putting ourselves in their shoes, so we will be able to understand them, and help them see the light in whatever darkness that they are in. And as a UMian, I want you all to remember that this would be the best legacy we can give to the future generation - a mentally healthy and empathic society. Thank you,” she said, to an eruption of applause. The newly crowned Mutya ng UM 2019 is in her second year taking up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.
The two representatives coming from UM Tagum join Normandia in her court: Second year English major Jesette Ore is at second place, and first year BEED student Kate Nalugon at third place, respectively.
Special awards given out that night and their winners are the following: Miss Eloquence and Best in Talent winner is Nalugon, Best in Creative Cultural Attire winner is Normandia, and Best in Glitter Glam and Evening Gown attire is Ore.
The Mutya ng UM 2019 was held at the UM Matina gymnasium last Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019.
