UM inaugurates UMBEL

The University of Mindanao (UM) proudly inaugurated its pioneering Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory (UMBEL) today, marking a significant milestone in the institution's commitment to advancing scientific research and sustainable development, particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
UMBEL is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed for metabolic engineering and synthetic biology research. These advanced scientific approaches are pivotal in developing technologies that mitigate environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices.
The creation of UMBEL was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Balik Scientists Dr. Angelo Bañares, Dr. Chosel Lawagon, and Dr. Terence Abaquita. Their return to the Philippines and commitment to contributing their expertise to national development have been instrumental in bringing this ambitious project to fruition. The Department of Science and Technology-Balik Scientist Program (DOST-BSP) has been a crucial supporter of this initiative, facilitating the scientists' reintegration and ensuring that their knowledge and skills are utilized to benefit the country.
The launch event was graced by prominent figures in the scientific and academic communities including UM President, Dr. Gullermo Torres Jr., DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development, Usec. Leah Buendia, Engr. Niñaliza Escorial, Deputy Executive Director of DOST-PCIEERD, Dr. Ruby Raterta, Chief of the Human Resources and Institution Development Division at DOST-PCIEERD, Mr. Edgardo Castillo, UM's Chief Administrative Officer, and the Balik Scientists hosted by UM, including the key figures behind UMBEL's establishment.
