UM studes among selected to attend prestigious trainings in Taiwan
Four students from the University of Mindanao carry the name not just of the school but of the country as well as they attend separate lectures in top Taiwanese universities designed to educate on history, diplomacy, culture, and humanity.
First to travel to Taiwan was Mico Niel Abad, a fourth year AB Political Science student, to attend the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) Discovery Camp at Fu Jen Catholic University from Aug. 4- 17.
Mr. Abad will be immersed in the economy, history, religion, and indigenous cultures of Taiwan, one of the Philippines’ closest neighbors, in the two-week discovery camp.
Mr. Abad is one of seven students coming from the Philippines, and among the 40 successful applicants coming from countries in Asia and the Pacific such as Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, China, Canada, Chile, and Mexico. He has also previously represented UM in debate competitions in Indonesia and Vietnam.
The next to leave for Taiwan earlier this week are composed of students from the College of Business Administration Education and the College of Arts and Sciences Education.
Andrea Dedace (BSED English), Dennis Lloyd Tecson (BSBA Human Resource Management), and Jhon Cesar Bautista (BSBA Financial Management) will be in Hualien, Taiwan from August 5-16 to attend the Service Learning, Humanities & Transcultural Program (SLHTP) at Tzu Chi University of Science and Technology (TCUST).
The SLHTP is a two-week program that is expected to enhance the awareness of participants on cultural differences, humanity, and service; with hopes that they in turn will influence their peers to become better individuals and aid in building a better society.
The university has so far sent three batches of students to this program at TCUST.
UM is consistent in supporting the endeavors of its student body in obtaining new learnings in different settings, whether here or abroad, especially if in the long run, their communities stand to benefit from it as well.
