New beetle specie named after UM President Dr. Guillermo P. Torres, Jr.

The University of Mindanao’s research team dedicated its newly discovered beetle specie to university president and chief executive officer Dr. Guillermo P. Torres Jr. in special reveal during the inauguration of the school’s new research hangar at the Matina campus last September 28, 2018.

Dubbed Metapocyrtus willietorresi, alluding to Dr. Torres’ nickname, the beetle was discovered at an elevation of 1, 800 meteres above sea level in the forests of Mindanao.

The beetle is the eighth new specie discovered by the UM team led by researchers Analyn Cabras and Milton Medina, both from the university’s Research and Publication Center, since they launched their research on coleoptera in 2015.

It can be remembered that a UM led team of researchers also discovered a new species of flowering plant in the Dinagat Islands, naming it Hoya indaysarae in honor of Davao city mayor Sara ‘Inday’ Duterte-Carpio earlier this year.
