Fostering a love of reading

Learning how to read and take in information allows a child to develop fully, broaden the imagination and their learning horizons, and allows more awareness about one’s surroundings; hence the University of Mindanao Genuine Love for Reading program was launched.

A banner project of the Basic Education faculty, Senior High school, and College of Teacher Education, the program is currently being implemented at the Magtuod Elementary School and Magtuod High School, and will last until next month.

It aims to improve the students’ reading speed and comprehension, and vocabulary skills; specifically for those students identified to be at the “frustrated level,” and at the end of the two month period, they should be able to read at a level appropriate to their grade level.

The tutorial program is a counterpart of the Department of Education’s IIRRI program – Philippine Informal Reading Inventory and is conducted every Wednesday for elementary students, and Thursdays for high school.

The project aims to boost students’ confidence in reading, comprehension, and vocabulary skills so that they can be more efficient with their studies, and to prepare them for National Achievement Test and other standardized test that involves a lot of reading.
