UMAEA stages successful blood drive

The University of Mindanao Administrative Employees Association (UMAEA) staged its annual blood donation drive last Wednesday, January 10 yielding 173 units collected.

Partnering with the Department of Health XI, the blood drive is an annual initiative of the organization and this year was held at the Professional Schools Building in UM Matina. The UMAEA engages in blood donation as aside from aiding in the supply of blood in the city and elsewhere which can aid in saving lives, donating blood also stimulates the bone marrow in humans to produce new cells in the body.

The units collected will still be tested for other medical concerns by DOH-XI before it is approved for storage and use.

More than a hundred participants were thoroughly screened and tested by doctors to ensure there would be no risk to future recipients of the donated blood.

Donation standards stipulate that blood donors should not be below 50 kilograms in weight, must have normal blood pressure and had at least seven hours of undisturbed sleep the night prior to donating, no tattoos, taking no maintenance medications (such as for hypertension or cholesterol), and had no alcoholic drinks the night before donating.

UMAEA is set to hold more blood drives in May and October, with dates to be announced soon.
